How Do You Fix a Leaking Roof in Winter [and Does Roof Type Matter?]

If water is coming out of soffit vents or coming into your house or building, ice dams are likely the main culprits.

In a residential building, substantial insulation in your attic can help prevent ice dams from forming. In both residential and commercial buildings, a rubber membrane installed under the shingles can help prevent ice dams. Do not place rock salt or ice melt products on your commercial or home roof during winter. These products can damage roofing materials.

Water is powerful and stubborn. If anything blocks its proper flow, it will find another route. Often in winter, water can back up underneath roof shingles. If that water breaks through the protective barrier below your home’s roof shingles, it will leak into your home; if water finds its ways to a bad seam or weak spots in flashing, it will leak into your commercial building.

Water can come out of soffit vents, too. This is a warning sign that you have roof issues and may soon need to fix a leaking roof in winter.

Don’t try to fix this yourself. Climbing up on your roof is risky in the best conditions; getting on a roof in freezing weather should be left to the pros. Improper tools and foot traffic can cause further damage.

A roofing professional will have the proper tools and experience to find the damage and fix it without causing further harm.

DOES ROOF TYPE MATTER FOR WINTER REPAIRS?

Yes, possibly.

The problem is, cold temperatures can limit the types of roofing materials that can be installed, or replaced, in winter.

Temperatures during winter, in Pennsylvania especially, can fluctuate greatly. Our team of roofing professionals can determine if weather conditions are suitable for a new home and commercial roof installation or restoration.

We repair and service all types of roofing, including asphalt shingles, metal, flat, and rubber roofingWe can also apply special cold-weather sealant on seams and patch isolated weak spots until the weather allows for a full roof restoration.

WHAT ROOF MAINTENANCE SHOULD BE DONE IN WINTER?

Ideally, you should look over your home’s roof to spot any loose shingles before snow falls. Get those repaired asap to prevent water seepage. Improve attic insulation, as we stated earlier. For commercial roofs, check for signs of ice dams such as icicles hanging from gutters and keep debris from your drainage system.
